A CurriculumAdventure

“I think two people with strong points of view can appreciate each other even more.” – Tim Cook.

With the release of Apple-made app “Swift Playgrounds” coming out soon, ten techy students from my school were invited to have a personal hands-on experience with the app, seen for the first time in a Chinese edition. We weren’t extremely excited at this prospect at first, but after a day at the Apple store in China Central Mall, we can proudly claim that this was one of the best days of our lives.

We started with two wonderful and funny teachers, Mr. Chen and Mr. Bao. They were extremely helpful and explained to us the fundamentals of programming, and a very thorough understanding of the word “coding”. We were introduced to the Apple-made programming language Swift, which none of us had experienced before.

We quickly progressed through the app, flying by the fundamental exercises with flying colors, and to the astonishment of the two instructors, we were quickly onto the topic of functions, one of the hardest elements to grasp in every coding language. But the instructors used a very playful and very interesting game to help us understand the concept better. We used the app GarageBand to create our own musical beatbox, and grouped a few sounds into something called a function. Then we could just “call” on one of our functions and have our iPads play acertain series of sounds.

Completely unknown to us, a tall handsome man walked into the store, and walked around our table, watching us learn the Swift language and our usage of their new app. But I realized that the man was none other than the Chief Executive Officer of Apple, Tim Cook himself. He walked around the table, and was astonished to see that I progressed much faster than my fellow comrades. He patted my back and I was shaking with excitement and I turned around and just blubbered “Oh my God, Hi, Mr. Cook, so nice to meet you.”

Mr. Cook was one of my personal heroes, and I really wanted to work for Apple since when I was around ten years old. Then I decided to learn computer science and received a Mac Mini on Christmas. I told him about how I really looked up to him, and how much I loved Apple products. He was smiling the whole time, and joked that Ineeded to buy an iPhone some time this year. He was a very cordial man, and seemed to warm up the whole atmosphere around him. While I was talking with Mr. Cook, I wasn’t entire on my nerves, I was exceptionally at ease, and it seemed like talking to an old friend. I think that he has that aura around him, a likable, powerful but warm-hearted, feeling. I think it was one of the main reasons he is the CEO of the biggest electronics company in the world.

The visit ended perfectly, and we took a group photo with Mr. Cook himself. It was wonderful and exciting. I think that as middle school students, we need to learn to be more like Mr. Cook, and learn to lead without the “grip of power” feel. We should embrace everyone’s opinions, and like Mr. Cook said, we need to have a strong point of view to be able to be appreciated more.

There is an old Chinese proverb: The student surpasses the teacher.I believe that with great teachers like our instructors, we could even surpass them and hopefully use our new found knowledge of the visit to make our own apps, and maybe even publish them. We should always remember our school's slogan: Better me, better world, no matter where we go or what we do. With the experience of the Swift Playgrounds curriculum, I truly believe that I can make the world a better place.
