My experiences and observations of Americaneducation
Many parents and scholars always argue that students in Chinese collegestend to relax themselves during the college time while students in Americancolleges tend to study even harder. But why? Through these days in an Americanhigh school, I hardly feel the atmosphere that my parents described about theAmerican universities. Every student here can get a specific study schedule atthe beginning of every new semester, which can help them better schedule theirpieces of time.
As this school is not as same as atraditional one, I can feel myself fully immersed into its innovativeenvironment instead. Our very first class successfully combined the cookingwith Spanish, we worked in a group, did a five-dollar challenge, designed ourown recipe, and used Spanish to make a short presentation. I found that aftereach project or activity, students all needed to make a reflection orconclusion, which eventually formed an integrated project. The teachers heretend to establish close relationship with their students, they are more likefriends from my point of view. And they tend to assign group or long-termprojects and lead the students to deal with them step by step. That is reallyhelpful, but is a slow process. These projects, really develop the students’teamwork ability, flexibility when dealing with the problems, also thepresentation and communication skills.
Comparing the American education withChinese education, I believe I more prefer and fit the Chinese one. ThoughAmerican students live a more relaxing and comfortable life than Chinesestudents, they are treating themselves in a lax way, from my perspective. Andin this situation, the one who refuses to study
Our host sister spends her time effectivelyin the rehearsal and concert!! more at home hardly gets good scores and apromising future. But actually there still exist some hard-working students whowork out their free time adequately and effectively.
Well, Chinese students always havequantities of homework to deal with every day. Some argue that it is of greatpressure to deal with such great amount of work, but actually it should beconsidered as a useful and effective tool for those students with lowerself-discipline to improve themselves. And it is practical, indeed. American schoolsprefer to give students plenty of time to deal with their work in class, thus, eliminated their everyday knowledge absorbing but providing students with morespace and time to develop themselves on their own to great extent. It is wellknown that American education always weighs more on the concepts rather thanthe practical usages. Therefore, they don’t grind the problems as deep as theChinese do, even though both American and Chinese students claim that they areall ‘not stop grinding’, but definitely toward different extent. In a nutshell,Chinese education is of more practical usages, like exams, but Americaneducation consists of individual development. And this, is greatly related tothe social atmosphere and culture, which need us to spend more time to furtherdigging and grinding.
The cultural differences between China andAmerica
I have been in San Diego for over two weeks, and I really enjoyed it a lot, so I’d like to talk a little bit about thecultural differences between China and America.
First of all, about the class we had take, inChina, we have a lot of classes going on every day, and we have a lot ofsubjects. Every subject is quite difficult, so we need to calculate a lot. Butin America, we only have three courses each day, and the class schedule isbasically the same, but the classes in America are more open-minded and wide, Ihave a lot of deep thinking during American classes, I really like it a lot.
For example, in chemistry classes I havetaken, we have learned about the atom scale model and size of atom. In china,we do not demonstrated it a lot but we do a lot of difficult calculatingpractices, so that we can be more familiar with the theory. However, inAmerica, we discuss about it, each of us brings out our own thoughts, and thenwe prove it, and finally when we finish figuring out the math, we go outside toreally practice it, it’s way more fun than using the examination paper. Andalso I learned a lot of vocabularies, like proton, neuron, electron and so on,I really developed my English skill in this atmosphere.
These two ways to learn are very different, which is fairly distinct because of the cultural differences. In china, we liketo do exclusive math, but in America, we tend to spend more time in sharingthoughts. If I could choose, I will choose the American way, because it canbring us more creative thoughts and we can really improve ourselves throughdiscussion
That’smy point of view about cultural differences in daily classes.
The tiny differences between China andAmerica that I discovered
We have been America for nearly 3 weeks. At first I couldn’t adapt thelifestyle here, but after several days, I gradually understood the differencesbetween the two countries in many aspects.
In study, everyday classes begin at 8:40AM, and finish at 3:40PM,obviously the study time at school is less than that of China a lot. Everyclass lasts about 1 hour so that students can focus on the stuff that they arelearning. In a certain period of a semester, every student only has 3-4courses, and every day repeats. Comparing to China, everyday we have to study 9main subjects as well as other English classes. The courses are diverse and theamount of homework everyday is immense correspondently.
In America, most class has a blackboard handwriting and agenda beforethe class in order to demonstrate the content and the plan that the class willlearn about. In the classroom students can eat, drink and even put the legsonto the table when the teacher permits. Students are allowed to come into andgo out of the classroom any time they want. They can even study outside theclassroom, the public area where they can search information and materials inthe public computer. Each computer requires students’ account to access theinternet.
The most technological application is the platform of classes. They usegoogle classroom to hand the homework and also upload some materials ofclasses. In Beijing Academy, there is a platform, but both students andteachers seldom use that, the only usage about the platform is to check thescore or do the assessment. Usually, the materials are uploaded in WeChat, butthe disadvantage is WeChat has too much functions such as mini programs andmoments, and these can distract the students, however, the google classroom canstill keep the students’ attention to the class.
In the daily life, there are also many differences. Almost every driverlet pedestrians to cross the road first. In China, such driver rarely appears. In USA, a driver will consider other drivers’ convenience, for example, whenthere is an exit of parking lot on either side of the road, and in front of theexit there are full of cars, the driver will stop his own car and make thespace between his car and the car in front of his which is enough for the carthat drives out from the exit. This is the small detail I saw one day and itlet me consider a lot. In greeting, people greet each other in a friendly wayby saying “what’s up” or “how are you doing”. They do hi five and also fisttheir bumps. “Please” “thanks” and “you’re welcome” are the common phrases evenpeople are familiar enough with each other. At home, they have different rulesin details which are basically the same. They respect each other and also theirprivacy
At last, there is an interesting thing, when people sneeze, others say“bless you”. This is also about their culture, and it is related to mythsimilar to the ancient China. There are many cultural differences between Chinaand America and the above is just a tiny part of it. Continue seeking thedifferences, and we will find more, and explore more.
